What: Interactive storytelling with Pattan’s Pumpkin and colouring activity

Duration: 30-45 minutes

Follow-on Activity: Plant pumpkins in the school garden

Y2 and Y3

What: Imagination workshop – what would you use the pumpkin for? Write and draw your ideas.

Duration: 30-45 minutes

Follow-on Activities: Word search, crossword

Y4 and above

What: Non-fiction workshop – Find out more about UNESCO protected Western Ghats of India, where Pattan’s Pumpkin is set and write a non-fiction story using the provided research material.

Duration: 45 minutes

Follow-on Activities: Write a story set in the Western Ghats. Is it going to be an adventure story or full of magic?


Empathy Workshop with You’re Safe With Me

An Empathy Lab selection for 2018

Reception and Y1

What: Interactive storytelling with You’re Safe With Me and colouring activity

Duration: 30-45 minutes

Follow-on Activity: Colour in and make masks.

Y2 and Y3

What: Imagination Workshop – based on the text of You’re Safe With Me, children will be encouraged to think about scary things and explain it in an alternate way.

Duration: 30-45 minutes

Follow-on Activities: Find out more about the animals in the story.

Y4 and above

What: Discussion & workshop – break down the explanations in the story and discuss the scientific vs. imaginative elements in the story. Encourage children to offer alternate explanations for scary elements of nature.

Duration: 45 minutes

Follow-on Activities: Discuss why natural disasters happen? Are some necessary while others are due to climate change?

Shortlisted for the Surrey Children’s Book Award 2018

Y3 and above

What: Storytelling from the book followed by a discussion about fairness.

Duration: 30-45 minutes

Follow-on Activity: Use the discussion guides available on www.chitrasoundar.com to discuss various concepts of empathy, fairness and the complexity of right vs wrong.
