    Literacy and Libraries

  • Words for Life promotes the benefits of literacy at all stages of life, to improve opportunities, health, family happiness and overall enjoyment. We provide advice and tips for parents about supporting babies and children as they develop communication skills, and downloadable resources to capture your child's imagination and help them enjoy words and language. We also recommend books with hooks - great for engaging reluctant readers.

    Literacy support

  • Arts Council England works to get great art to everyone by championing, developing and investing in artistic experiences that enrich people's lives. We support a range of artistic activities from theatre to music, literature to dance, photography to digital art, and carnival to crafts.

  • English PEN is the founding centre of International PEN, a membership association with 144 branches in more than one hundred countries, providing an active and supportive community for writers and readers around the world. PEN was founded in 1921 by Amy Dawson Scott (pictured left, centre) in order to promote literature as a means of greater understanding between cultures.

  • Founded in 1996, Lapidus is the UK organisation for writing and reading for health and wellbeing and works from the principle that words used creatively can be a powerful tool for health and personal, community and world development

    Writers' support

  • Founded in 1971 by a group of Los Angeles-based children's writers, the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators is a non-profit , 501 (c)3 organization which is one of the largest existing organizations for writers and illustrators. It is the only professional organization specifically for those individuals writing and illustrating for children and young adults in the fields of children's literature, magazines, film, television, and multimedia.

  • The SCBWI British Isles region offers members support, information and education at a local level. International membership automatically grants you membership to the British Isles Region or any other region local to you.

  • The Society has been serving the interests of professional writers for more than a century. Today it has more than 9,000 members writing in all areas of the profession (from novelists to doctors, textbook writers to ghost writers, broadcasters to academics, illustrators to translators). Whatever your specialisation, you are eligible to join as soon as you have been offered a contract.

  • The Writers' Guild of Great Britain supports writers across media including books, film, online, radio, theatre, TV and videogames.

  • The Poetry Society was founded in 1909 to promote "a more general recognition and appreciation of poetry". Since then, it has grown into one of Britain's most dynamic arts organisations, representing British poetry both nationally and internationally. Today it has nearly 4000 members worldwide and publishes the leading poetry magazine, Poetry Review.

  • The most comprehensive and accessible collection of poetry from 1912 in Britain. It is the major library for modern and contemporary poetry funded by the Arts Council England. The Poetry Library promotes the reading of poetry for people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds in collaboration with Learning and Participation.

  • The Poetry School was founded in 1997 by three poets - Mimi Khalvati, Jane Duran and Pascale Petit with the aim of providing structured, high quality teaching programmes for adults to develop their poetry from its beginnings through to advanced level.

  • Books for Keeps is the UK's leading, independent children's book magazine. It was launched in 1980 and ever since has been reviewing hundreds of new children's books each year and publishing articles on every aspect of writing for children. There are over 12,500 reviews on our new website and more than 2,000 articles including interviews with the top children's authors and illustrators.

  • Carousel is the only printed magazine about children's books for parents/carers and professionals - in fact, everyone who is interested in children's literature.

Book Fairs

  • India - New Delhi

    The National Book Trust, India, established in 1957 for the promotion of books and to inculcate book culture in India, organises book fairs/festivals at local, regional and national levels and a biennial New Delhi World Book Fair. The New Delhi World Book Fair is the biggest book fair in the Afro-Asian Region and attracts exhibitors both from India and abroad.

  • Taiwan - Taipei

    TIBE is the annual meeting point for Asian publishers and one of the most diversified international book fairs in Asia. It attracts publishers, editors, rights managers, distributors, booksellers and librarians to select the latest titles at the beginning of the year.

  • Israel - Jerusalem

    First held in 1963, THE JERUSALEM INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR [JIBF] is a unique biennial event which draws over 1200 publishers from more that 40 countries who display more than 100,000 books in different languages.

  • France - Paris

    The Salon du Livre gets bigger every year with a steadily expanding programme aimed at the book trade, including an audiovisual rights market, numerous panel discussions on topical issues, the SNE Conference and a new programme for booksellers.

  • Italy - Bologna

    The Bologna Children's Book Fair is the most important international event dedicated to the children's publishing and multimedia industry. In Bologna authors, illustrators, literary agents, licensors and licensees, packagers, distributors, printers, booksellers, and librarians meet to sell and buy copyright, find the very best of children's publishing and multimedia production, generate and gather new contacts while strengthening professional relationships, discover new business opportunities, discuss and debate the latest sector trends.

    BookExpo America (BEA) combines the largest selection of English language titles on the planet with special industry and author events along with unparalleled educational content delivering a dynamic environment for networking, sourcing and relationship building. BEA offers three event-packed days, more than 500 authors, hundreds of new titles, 1,300+ exhibitors and multiple Author Stages, along with the IDPF Digital Zone.


    The purpose of ALA is "The object of the American Library Association shall be to promote library service and librarianship." The stated mission is, "To provide leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all."

  • China - Hongkong

    The First Hong Kong Book Fair was held in 1990. The Fair has become an annual major event in Hong Kong with the number of visitors reaching new high every year. The organiser, the HKTDC, has always been striving to promote local reading culture. Apart form extensively inviting the public to the Fair to visit and buy books, it also spares no effort in organising diversified cultural activities during the Book Fair period with a view to enhance the contents and quality of the Fair.

    The Frankfurt Book Fair is a meeting place for the industry's experts. Be they publishers, booksellers, agents, film producers or authors - each year in October, they all come together and create something new.
