Often author-illustrators create a dummy to figure out and also demonstrate the essence of a picture book.

However if you are a writer and do not illustrate, you will not be required to send a dummy to your publisher. You should not send one in any case. Most often editors prefer to read the text continuously to understand the narrative flow and they can visualise the images, your text will evoke.

So as a writer who cannot draw, how can you use a dummy to improve your writing?

Picture book dummies or a planner as I call it helps to plan the flow of the story. It helps to understand if your text has enough visuals in each spread. But if you’re not an illustrator or bad at arts and crafts like me, then you don’t need to struggle with a dummy. You can use a presentation software to play with the layouts. Here is how.
