#Write30 – What I heard

This prompt is inspired by Rumaan Alam, author of Leave the World Behind.

Pick a song your character loves (whether because it’s pop culture or because of emotional connection or because of love interest or because of their emotional state). Pick the title and a line from the song (any line) to inspire a scene.

Remember: Using a whole song can be expensive for your publisher to buy rights! Refer to the fair use policy!

  • The line can invoke a visual in your mind that you put into a scene.
  • The character can use the line in their dialogue or to how they react to a scene.
  • The theme of the entire scene can be affirmed or contradicted by this line – but it must be stated somewhere.
  • You can play the song in the background and make the character reflect on it or comment on it – agreeing or disagreeing.
