Five Tips for Writing Fabulous Stories

  1. Write what you enjoy reading. Ghost stories or detective stories? Dog stories or giraffe stories? If you think of topics and genre that you enjoy then you’ll never get bored writing the story. And your knowledge and passion will make the story sparkle. (Are you reading? If not, start reading.)
  2. Be specific. Whether you’re describing a dinosaur or a space shuttle, go for the details. Be specific with action, names of colours, shapes, trees and even smells.
  3. Make your main character believable. Do they have weaknesses, warts and worries? Do they get scared in the dark or allergic to mushrooms? Don’t make them too good to be true. That does not mean they can’t be fantastic. They should be true to who they are.
  4. Make your villains nasty and unpredictable. Your villain should be stronger than your main character. Give them quirks – do they love their teddy bears? Do they wear pyjamas with doughnut designs? Or do they eat raw cactus for breakfast?
  5. Plan your ending. And make sure your ending solves the problem that was created in the beginning. If your main character wants to rescue his little brother in the beginning of the story, it cannot end with him flying off to space without his brother. If you know your ending, the middle of the storycan journey towards the ending, even if it takes a detour or two.
