Weather affects people – and therefore your characters. Weather can indicate
- Mood of the character or provide a contrast to the character’s feelings
- Tone of the story
- Plot point – a storm sinking a boat
- Enhance setting.
This prompt is inspired by The Art of Fiction by David Lodge
Write a passage or a scene or a poem, either something new or in your current work in progress that…
- Uses weather to show at least two of the four things indicated.
- You can use it in exposition or dialogue.
- It can be in the beginning or middle or end of your writing.
- Make sure your viewpoint is first or close third person and not just the omniscient narrator.
Here is a tip – think of the weather you want to put in your story and brainstorm related words and images before writing the scene.
